Hope and peace await somewhere over the rainbow. Art by Siobhán
Call it a rainbow lining. Children across the world are spreading cheer (and staying busy) by decorating their windows with homemade rainbows. Exuberant renditions brighten up the streets from Brooklyn and Philadelphia to Barcelona and Puglia, where the practice is believed to have originated (some of the earliest versions are painted with “Andrà tutto bene,” Italian for “Everything is going to be all right”).

The streets may be emptier than we ever could have fathomed, but look up—or if you’re disinclined to take a walk, look up the #rainbowconnection hashtag (yes, that’s a nod to the wonderful Kermit)—for bright spots of hope.
