Chris Evert
You love tennis because…I can be myself on the court.
Your favorite US Open memory as a player…In 1980 when I beat Tracy Austin in the semifinals and Hana Mandlikova in the finals. I had lost to Tracy five times in a row and everyone predicted she would win again. I was 25, and being able to come back from the losing streak motivated me to play for quite a few more years.
…and as a spectator? The Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras quarterfinal match of 2001 that Sampras won 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 7-6.
How did you handle nerves during finals? The real trick was in isolating the moment. I tried not to think in terms of winning games and sets, but winning points one at a time.
Who is your favorite player today?Roger Federer
Describe your on-court style. In my early years I wore sundresses, backless dresses and really girly clothes. I wanted to always be feminine. I wore makeup, ruffled bloomers and jewelry.
What is your beauty regimen?I carry sunscreen in my bag. I get a monthly facial, and I always wear sunscreen, moisturizer and a hat.
What’s your favorite way to give back?I hold the annual Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic in Boca Raton, Florida. The money raised goes to help ensure a bright future for children and families whose lives have been affected by drug abuse. Everyone deserves a second chance. This November 5-7, 2010, will be the 21st year of the event.
