Surface To Air‘s Gordon Hull created two stylish films for Tory—The Getaway, a noir-chic vignette starring Noot Seear and Possessed!, featuring tap-dancing ghosts wearing Tory’s new jeans. We asked him about inspiration and working with ghosts.

What inspired The Getaway?
I like a strong woman with a mysterious past and a ton of attitude. During a conversation with Tory about an upcoming trip she said, ‘I never travel anywhere without three pairs of shoes and two pairs of sunglasses.’ It was a real inspirational starting point. What a woman carries on a little getaway….

Your favorite noir film?
I’m pretty obsessed with Gilda, The Lady from Shanghai and To Catch a Thief. Rita Hayworth and Grace Kelly are totally different women but to me there is something incredibly Tory about each one of them.

Who is Noot—an international woman of mystery?
Exactly! I see The Getaway as being a scene from a much larger adventure. She’s on the run, she’s fearless, she’s stylish and she loves macaroons. Next stop—Lake Como….

And she’s wearing….
That sexy Rocco biker jacket, the skinny jeans, the heel with attitude, the flashy bag. She might be on the run but she’s not afraid to attract attention. The best place to hide is often in plain sight… just make sure you’re looking tight.

Tell us about Possessed!
I like the idea of these phantom dancers just doing their thing. And what would be more fun than a bunch of tap dancing ghosts! Possessed denim! We used a Ouija board in the casting process. That was interesting.

Is this your first musical?
It’s not. I love working with dancers and choreographers. In this case it’s about how these jeans move. This was a bit of a challenge. Ghosts can be notoriously hard to work with.

What are the ghosts wearing?
Tory’s Dip Dye, Tomboy and Straight Leg jeans and the Perforated Wedge. I call them the new ‘Tap Dance Wedge’ if you will…

Whose song and who choreographed it?
Speech Debelle’s The Key, and the choreography is by the wonderful Rachel Bress. She put it together over a few weeks, and we had a number of dance séances leading up to the big day.

Watch the exclusive movie Tory made with celebrated filmmaker Van Neistat. Van gave Tory a digital voice recorder to tape her thoughts and impressions during a trip to Europe—whatever, whenever. Tory then handed it off to Van in Korea where he matched what he saw in Seoul with what Tory said in Europe. The result? Whimsical, engaging and worth multiple viewings.
