About Last Night: The Barnes Foundation Dinner

About Last Night: The Barnes Foundation Dinner

It was a New York art world moment — about 90 miles south, give or take, in the leafy environs of Philadelphia. On Wednesday evening, Tory co-hosted a dinner at the Barnes Foundation, where she’s a new board member, to shine a spotlight on the institution’s storied collections and some newer exhibits, like Yinka Shonibare’s Magic Ladders show. Here’s your exclusive glimpse at the event — which included guests such as Jeff Koons, Vito Schnabel and Simon and Michaela de Pury— and keep reading to learn what Dr. Samantha Boardman (who was a co-host with Salon 94 gallerist Jeanne Greenberg-Rohatyn) has to say about the night and her personal art obsessions…

Playlist: The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson’s latest film The Grand Budapest Hotel opens today. Starring Ralph Fiennes and F. Murray Abraham (among many others), it’s a lush visual escape to the fictional Eastern European nation of Zubrowka. There are stolen paintings, a mustachioed concierge, pink-packaged pastries, an octogenarian countess (played by, yes, Tilda Swinton), bobsleds, butlers, inmates… The soundtrack is no less richly layered and captivating. Listen to it now on Spotify and keep reading to get the playlist and discover the backstory behind it all.

Tory Entertains: The Swizzle

The Swizzle is an old-fashioned drink that’s beloved by Tory’s parents and brothers. It’s also the name of one of our new lip colors, a reddened plum with a delicate sheen. Here, the recipe for the classic — which comes not shaken or stirred, but swizzled with a wooden swizzle stick — straight from the home of the rum swizzle, Bermuda’s The Swizzle Inn.

To Do: Alex Katz at Thaddaeus Ropac

Alex Katz’s new exhibit in Paris opens today at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac’s outpost in Pantin, in the city’s northeast quarters. It’s a deep dive into his oeuvre in portraiture, with some hundred works dating back 45 years — from his outsize paintings to his aluminum cutouts, iconic works to the lesser-known sketches. For those in the midst (and madness) of Paris Fashion Week, the exhibit offers the perfect cultural escape. Not in the City of Light? You can still soak in the Brooklyn artist’s intense colors and deceptively reductive style; he currently has a show at Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut and another opening at London’s Timothy Taylor Gallery in three weeks.

Word of Mouth: The Great Beauty

Even though we all love American Hustle, Gravity and Wolf of Wall Street, the Oscar film that has us buzzing the most is Best Foreign Language Film nominee The Great Beauty — which lives up to its name as one of the most gorgeous films of the year. The fashion, the parties, the breathtaking Roman backdrop… It all swirls around aging bon vivant Jep, a journalist who wrote a best-seller 40 years ago and hasn’t found much success since. Instead, he throws lavish Gatsby-style bashes for the city’s elite. But just like with Jay Gatsby, the opulence isn’t quite enough…
