Pre-Fall 2013: Preview

Pre-Fall 2013: Preview

“For Pre-Fall 2013, we were inspired by an officer’s jacket my mother wore and handed down to me. We play military jackets and coats against chiffon dresses, knit suits and clean separates, with embroidery and beading meant to look like prints. Boxy bags reflect the tailored mood, while flats feature a strict pointy-toe and booties, a contrasting gold heel.” — Tory

Party Pants

Trend: Party Pants

Trend: Party Pants

The Look: Pants with personality that go day or evening.

Style Tip: Let a great trouser be your statement piece. Pair prints in the same color family — one big pattern, one small. Then try complementary colors. To stay with a monotone look, try working in different fabrics for a textural mix. Treat stripes like they’re a neutral. Swap out a party dress for rich brocade pants (so nonchalant cool). The point is: have fun. These party pants are instant mood-lifters.

In Memoriam: Ravi Shankar & Dave Brubeck

We learn in school to respect our elders, and we have lost two peerless music icons the last few days. While Ravi Shankar, here, and Dave Brubeck lived different musical lives, they are bound by an unwavering commitment to the power and spirit of music. Both worked into their nineties and leave us with unique and timeless legacies to entertain and instruct us. We salute their youthful wisdom and will be spinning their records throughout the holidays and forever…

Night Panther likes the sound of the word (or nonword) “snudge.” We like the sound of the song they titled Snudge — featured in our Resort 2013 video. We asked bandmates Farzad Houshiarnejad, Michael Cammarata, Chris Radwanski and Marissa Lesnick about the etymology of the band and “snudge.”

Word of Mouth: Did You See the David Geffen Doc?

We sat riveted during the recent PBS American Masters series on David Geffen. The Brooklyn roots, his musical Midas touch, the Hollywood stumbles and ultimate triumph, the political power plays, the obsession with Jack Warner’s famed mansion. Geffen’s story defines the American Dream. He played Svengali to generations of talent — Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana and so on. He is famously elusive, and yet Susan Lacy, the director, executive producer and creator of the series, not only got Geffen on record, but most of his friends, too. Like Steven Spielberg, Young and Cher, to name a few. We asked Lacy what the experience was like. Fascinating stuff.

Ever since he opened a store in Miami in the Nineties, it’s been his second home — so who better to teach us how to navigate the city during Art Basel, when the international art world descends for a week of parties and openings? He knows all the best places for people watching, crowd-avoiding and finding the best Café Cubano.

Word of Mouth: Bill’s

Carrying on the tradition of New York City speakeasies, John DeLucie — he of The Lion and Crown fame — has restored and re-opened Bill’s Gay Nineties, which closed earlier this year after an 88 year run. Now, it just goes by Bill’s, the walls are a deep blue and crammed with fun pictures and mirrors. Bill’s Gay Nineties first opened in the 1920s, thumbing its nose at Prohibition. Then, it was an homage to the drink-swilling, good-times Nineties…as in the 1890s. In turn, Bill’s has such classics on its menu as the Hanky Panky cocktail, made with Dorothy Parker gin.

Tory On: Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is a divine study in contrasts, growth and optimism — as Tory discovered on a recent trip. From the excited planning for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics (sports, especially soccer, are a religion there) to the white sand of Copacabana and all those girls from Ipanema to the deep green rainforest-covered mountains that hug the city, Rio is a city full of energy, ideas and, yes, some uber-stylish people.

Wearing color doesn’t have to be a tricky thing. As blogger Dana Suchow demonstrates, you can let loose with the neutrals — as long as you pick a great handbag that packs a colorful punch, like our suede and leather 797 satchel here in deep pine. And once you have that power statement piece, feel free to get creative with smaller, more subtle touches. How about a matching silk scarf to go with it?
