Watching Versace fashion shows and reading Vogue back in the Nineties. And George Michael’s Freedom and Too Funky music videos.

The quintessential item in every Shanghai wardrobe…
Cheongsam and PJs.

Favorite Chinese designer…
HuiShan Zhang. He is truly a garment maker. He always creates the most beautiful clothes with defined details and a Chinese cultural-inspired touch. He cares about clothes — he’s not just an image maker, he’s the real deal.

Best place to shop for local designers…
Dong Liang, a super-cool store with a great selection of local Chinese designers. It was founded by three young Chinese people who are passionate about design, beauty and the spirit behind clothes. They discover and support a lot of new talented Chinese designers in China. I have known and supported them from the beginning.

And best place to shop for vintage…
Luxe Vintage, founded by two cool Shanghainese ladies, Eva and Qing. In fact, the vintage business is really hard to get going in China, because most Chinese don’t wear vintage clothes. They are very superstitious about clothes that have already been worn by someone else. They consider it bad luck.

One thing you’d be surprised to know about Shanghai style…
Sneakers are very trendy now. Every stylish girl is wearing sneakers, everything from Adidas Stan Smith and Nike Air Max to skate sneakers from Céline and Vans. Shanghai is a very feminine city, and most of the Shanghainese girls love to wear high heels, so this is a bit of a surprise on the Shanghai style scene.
