Tory opens up about the new resort collection, from style tips to inspiration.
Resort 2015 was inspired by the sun-bleached palette of Milton Avery. The mood is relaxed; the silhouettes casual, clean and structured. We focused on craftsmanship: lacquered guipure lace, intricate embroideries inspired by my mother’s old handkerchiefs and accessories like the season’s bucket bag with crochet leather handles.
How did you strike upon Milton Avery?
We are always researching artists and going to exhibits. I’ve been a fan of Avery’s since I studied art history in college. He has an incredible sense of color and shape… I love how he uses pale pinks in particular.
What are the most important silhouettes?
If you look at the lines, everything is streamlined and spare — mini A-line skirts, anoraks, T-shirts, snug knits, etc. We balanced this with special prints and patterns, whether two-tone florals or guipure lace. It was all about the mix — so even a sporty anorak has a feminine side with delicate florals.
Describe the prints and patterns…
We did everything from the graphic floral Issy to ikats (a favorite) and medallion-like motifs that were inspired by moldings in old European architecture. One of my favorites is an all-over embroidery that started with a vintage handkerchief my mother has had as long as I can remember.
How do you wear them?
I am always partial to florals and stripes — especially worn together. I love the juxtaposition of graphic lines against the organic shapes of flowers. We did a lot of great t-shirts that work perfectly for layering.
