‘Tis the season of gift giving, but let’s make it a season of giving back, too. To celebrate World AIDS Day today, we’re spotlighting a very special foundation, Generation Ubuntu, which provides care and support for children in Africa living with HIV. The nonprofit was founded by an enterprising Whitney Johnson, who was inspired to make a difference after studying abroad in South Africa and volunteering at an orphanage in the township of Khayelitsha. Generation Ubuntu launched in 2006. Johnson, now based in Cape Town, was just 21.

Today, Johnson continues to do good on her mission. She’s established her own center in Khayelitsha that offers healthcare, nutrition, psychosocial support and education to children living with HIV. More than that, she provides these kids — and their families — with a community, and hope.
