Interior decorator David Hicks’ diverse and rich career was the underlying inspiration behind Tory’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection — leading to myriad bold and colorful trends. Here, Tory breaks them down.

PATTERN RECOGNITION
“For our Spring 2018 collection, we looked through David Hicks’ personal scrapbooks and chose our favorite prints. We played around with color and scale and mixed them in with our own takes. One of our key prints is inspired by a geo pattern he created. We did it in several colorways — pink, blue and brown — and printed it on everything, from swim to terrycloth polos to accessories. There’s even a delicate lace dress with graphic cut-outs in that octagonal pattern.”

FRAME OF MIND
“Hicks was known for framing his rooms with borders to highlight special details. We picked up on that idea with lace borders on feminine tops and dresses. We also added it on caftans and in bold stripes.”

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT TERRY
“Terrycloth is a big message for Spring. We looked to our own archive, bringing back a block-T print from our first collection, and used it on terry tunics, caftans and slides in a way we thought Hicks would have done it — bold and audacious. And, of course, we also have it in a towel.”

ONLY HUE
“Hicks’ fearless and witty take on color and print has made a lasting impression on me, so we made this collection an explosion of both. The colors are joyful; the prints, bright and bold. Our floral print this season even traces its inspiration back to him — he could design gardens as brilliantly as he did rooms.”

ON THE LOOSE
“There’s a real sense of ease in this collection — the silhouettes are more fluid, the pants are cut wider, jackets have a boxier fit… We added drawstring details to some of our dresses to further that relaxed vibe.”

BLOCK PARTY
“We continued the season’s framing motif with color-blocking and stripe details. A few of our dresses began as four scarves we pinned together, letting the former define the shape of the latter. The blocking here is beautiful, a mix of colors and prints…”

SLIP, SLIP, HOORAY!
“We did a number of slipdresses this season — I love how it’s a feminine shape but also very effortless. We played with color here, too, adding bright orange lace peeking out between pleats and patches in bold contrast colors.”
