Students at a CITTA school in Orissa, IndiaA chance encounter with Mother Teresa and finding a David Hockney portrait led Michael Daube to found CITTA. Since 1997, it has created hospitals, schools, women’s centers and orphanages in India, Nepal and Mexico. Here, Michael’s inspiration.
I was inspired to launch CITTA when…
I had met two children in Calcutta who needed to beg to raise money for others. They said they had found a place that fed and took care of them, and it turned out to be an orphanage run by Mother Teresa! I worked there for three weeks—the time I spent with Mother Teresa was an amazing eye-opener. I then came back to the US and found a portrait by David Hockney in a garbage. I didn’t hesitate to sell the piece, return to India and open a hospital in India.
CITTA means…
Compassionate mind related to the heart in Sanskrit.
I love what I do because…
I love being able to spend time with such an amazing variety of people. You can’t help but feel productive when the outcome deals with health care, education, job development and economic growth.
My most memorable moment was…
When I first started the hospital in Orissa, India, a woman was waiting to be helped, and she said, “Before the hospital, even a small infection in our family could lead to death. Now with the hospital here, we are able to think of so many other things to strengthen our family.” That really stayed with me.
You can get involved by…
Sponsoring a student at a CITTA school or donating online. If you want to volunteer tell us your skills or talents, and we’ll let you know where you can join in.
