Look We Love: Margaret Zhang’s Pattern Play

Look We Love: Margaret Zhang’s Pattern Play

Navy and white is one of our go-to classic combinations, but we also love seeing it in high-contrast pattern play. Sydney-based Shine by Three blogger Margaret Zhang, here wearing Tory’s Gina tunic, Callie pant, Sadie slingback and Jane clutch, shows us how mix mastery is done — it’s all a matter of print scale. She finished the look with subtle accents of leopard, red and metallic, for a bold pairing of pattern and color that leaves a lasting impact.

Two Tory tunics, two chic (and totally different) looks. Could I Have That’s Samantha Hutchinson went minimalist in Morocco, pairing her lightly embellished Tory tunic with breezy wide-leg pants and sandals. Meanwhile, in the second slide, Gal Meets Glam’s Julia Engel hit the sand in that classic and always stylish combination: white jeans and a colorful tunic — in this case, the T-Print tunic from Tory’s Tunic Collection for Saks Fifth Avenue.

Book of the Week: California Surfing & Climbing in the Fifties

Imagine a time when the surfing community was so small, most surfers worldwide knew each other on a first-name basis. Bikinis were high-waisted and swim trunks skimmed the tops of thighs. Riding the California waves was akin to exploring the Wild West. It was the birth of an era — and California Surfing and Climbing in the Fifties, from T. Adler Books, captures the pioneers in action.

Sun and stripes — what better combination is there? Hat tip to Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific, here wearing the Kirsten tunic from Tory’s exclusive Saks Fifth Avenue Tunic Collection while on vacation in warm Winter Park, Florida. Paired together with a classic red lip, beachy chapeau and tortoiseshell shades, the look is laid-back yet refined. In fact, it even channels the tunic’s original inspiration: the relaxed elegance of the French Riviera in the Sixties.

Pinterest: Tory Tunics

For Tory, it all started with a tunic she found in a Parisian flea market. The silhouette reminded her of something her mother and grandmother had worn in the Sixties and Seventies, and it became the inspiration for one of our first designs. That was 10 years ago and, since then, there have been many more tunic highlights. We compiled them in one place on Pinterest — our tunics, the tastemakers who’ve worn them and, of course, our favorite tunic inspirations.

About Last Night: The Barnes Foundation Dinner

It was a New York art world moment — about 90 miles south, give or take, in the leafy environs of Philadelphia. Wes Anderson’s latest film The Grand Budapest Hotel opens today. Starring Ralph Fiennes and F. Murray Abraham (among many others), it’s a lush visual escape to the fictional Eastern European nation of Zubrowka. There are stolen paintings, a mustachioed concierge, pink-packaged pastries, an octogenarian countess (played by, yes, Tilda Swinton), bobsleds, butlers, inmates… The soundtrack is no less richly layered and captivating. Listen to it now on Spotify and keep reading to get the playlist and discover the backstory behind it all.

Tory Entertains: The Swizzle

The Swizzle is an old-fashioned drink that’s beloved by Tory’s parents and brothers. It’s also the name of one of our new lip colors, a reddened plum with a delicate sheen. Here, the recipe for the classic — which comes not shaken or stirred, but swizzled with a wooden swizzle stick — straight from the home of the rum swizzle, Bermuda’s The Swizzle Inn.

To Do: Alex Katz at Thaddaeus Ropac

Alex Katz’s new exhibit in Paris opens today at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac’s outpost in Pantin, in the city’s northeast quarters. It’s a deep dive into his oeuvre in portraiture, with some hundred works dating back 45 years — from his outsize paintings to his aluminum cutouts, iconic works to the lesser-known sketches. For those in the midst (and madness) of Paris Fashion Week, the exhibit offers the perfect cultural escape. Not in the City of Light? You can still soak in the Brooklyn artist’s intense colors and deceptively reductive style; he currently has a show at Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut and another opening at London’s Timothy Taylor Gallery in three weeks.
