Word of Mouth: New York’s LeChurro

Happy National Day of Spain! If you’re in New York, you can ring in the holiday — which fetes Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas — with a classic treat from the country: the sweet fried churro. Former attorney Elena Madariaga’s LeChurro spot on the Upper East Side offers both traditional and inventive takes on that Spanish donut, which she recommends as breakfast fare. And, indeed, once you start the day with a café cortado and churro topped with fresh fruit, you’ll never look at a slice of toast the same again. We talked to Elena about that doughy goodness here.

To Do: Chuck Close at Guild Hall

No computer screen can replicate the experience of seeing a Chuck Close painting in person. There’s the way his mammoth portraits, several feet tall, can engulf you. The way their faces melt into abstract swirls of color, neatly organized like pixels on a grid, when you step close. And the way they snap back into people when you step back. It really is an experience. So if you find yourself in East Hampton, swing by the museum at Guild Hall where, until October 14, you can take in a new exhibit of mostly recent works — and delight in the artist’s plays of perception up close.

It’s an engaging read full of advice and humor, where she shares personal tales and recommendations on everything from books to healthy eats. To Do: 50 Years of Rock & Roll at Snap Galleries

To Do: 50 Years of Rock & Roll at Snap Galleries

A lot can happen in 50 years. Just ask British photographer Gered Mankowitz, who’s catalogued half a century’s worth of the ever-shifting musical scene — from the Swinging Sixties and Glam Rock Seventies to the New Wave Eighties and beyond. You can soak it all in at London’s Snap Galleries, which is celebrating Gered’s golden jubilee with a retrospective exhibit open till November 2nd. It’s an impressive time warp, where you can spot the famous mugs of rock-and-roll legends including Marianne Faithful, Kate Bush, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Glitter, Duran Duran and The Rolling Stones. Curiously enough, these now-iconic portraits owe a nod to Inspector Jacques Clouseau himself, Peter Sellers; the actor, a family friend, was the one who initially encouraged Gered to pursue photography.

Did You Know? Vetiver

Did You Know? Vetiver

Did You Know? Vetiver

Vetiver is Tory’s first scent memory: Her father Buddy (right) and brothers all wore it, and eventually she did, too. Known as the “oil of tranquility” in the East for its calming properties, it’s been distilled for its fragrance since ancient times, and much like wine, its earthy, woody scent improves with age. Vetiver is traditionally known as a fragrance for men — JFK, Alain Delon, Paul McCartney, Harrison Ford and Hugh Jackman are all said to have been swayed by the sensual, smoky scent. Of course, the note’s versatile enough for a woman to wear as well and carries with it a little unexpected edge.
