10 Minutes with an Entrepreneur: Producer Todd Traina

On the occasion of its DVD release, Todd takes some time out to chat about the film and his career.

Tastemaker Roundtable: Five Chefs, One Talk
Today’s a big day at the New York City Wine & Food Festival. Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian is hosting a Greenmarket Brunch pairing New York chefs with their favorite greenmarket farmers. Landmarc’s Marc Murphy is holding another brunch featuring local eats, Taste of New York, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo. Tonight, there’s a Global Night Market — expect plenty of lobster and crab rolls courtesy of Luke Holden. We rounded up the trio, plus veteran chef Jonthan Waxman, who’s participating in Geoffrey’s event, and festival first-timer chef Fatima Ali (who’s part of tomorrow’s Best Bloody Mary Brunch) for a roundtable talk on all things culinary.
Most Wanted: The Turtleneck
Tomboy yet feminine. Infinitely classic. The Christina turtleneck is a Tory personal favorite — and the style she wore in our beauty campaign. Made of super-soft cashmere and in one of Tory’s favorite hues — navy — it’s a staple for the season and one of fall’s notable trends, perfect for layering or equally chic on its own.
Best Dressed: Helena Bordon
Helena Bordon knows how to create serious buzz. The Brazilian blogger and co-founder of retail chain 284 played up the printed and gem-like scarabs of Tory’s Jasmine top and Violet skirt with similarly iridescent sunglasses and matching jewel-tone heels, while offering a cool point of contrast in the neon pop of her bag. Those styling skills must run in the family — her mother, Donata Meirelles, is style director for Vogue Brazil.
Spotlight On: Nasty Gal’s Sophia Amoruso
For a riveting rags-to-riches fashion fairy tale, look no further than Sophia Amoruso, Founder, CEO and Creative Director of Nasty Gal, who managed in less than seven years to take an eBay page filled with vintage finds and turn it into a booming online retailer with a well-curated mix of new and vintage fashion. Here, she tells us about her team, her inspiration and her best vintage find ever.
Word of Mouth: Old Westbury Gardens
A cinematic Long Island estate that has served as home to both Hitchcock villains (North by Northwest) and teenage naifs (Cruel Intentions), Old Westbury Gardens is also the setting for our Holiday 2013 lookbook. Originally commissioned by American financier John S. Phipps as a wedding present to his homesick British bride, the 44-room, Charles II-style house brims with English furnishings and is surrounded by 200 acres of formal gardens. It’s appeared in films as far-reaching as North by Northwest and Love Story, and inspired the grand Buchanan estate in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. But this house isn’t just a friend of the cinematic arts: a family-commissioned John Singer Sargent portrait hangs in its dining room.
Holiday 2013: Lookbook
The finale looks from our runway show have arrived, with perfect timing for the season ahead. Holiday 2013 can be summed up in two words: effortless chic. A palette of black and blush sets the stage for shine — with easy statement pieces for day to evening.
Tory On: Cocktail Dressing
Here wearing the Reese tunic and Elisabeth skirt, Tory discusses all things cocktail dressing, from her favorite styles and evening accessorizing to what makes a great holiday party.
Holiday 2013: Video
Soft blush and sharp black. The shimmer of embellishment. Hair blowing in the breeze. Filmmaker Robert Nethery captures effortless glamour in our Holiday 2013 video, as models Zuzanna Bijoch, Tilda Lindstam and Laura Kampman wander the verdant grounds of Long Island’s Old Westbury Gardens. Layered with the romantic haziness of Tamaryn’s track Love Fade, the mood is set: This season’s styles are easy enough to run through fields in… and chic enough for a night out.
Style Tip: Cold-Weather Chic
The temperature is starting to dip into chilly territory and it’s only going to drop further. So get ahead of the season with these chic quick fixes for that cold-weather snap. Our Electra fur coat, for instance, is as glamorous as it is cozy, instantly transforming any look to stunning effect. Or try the stylish alternative to the scarf: the versatile snood, whether in iridescent wool or plush and reversible cashmere and fur. For more great looks, shop the Cold-Weather Collection.
Word of Mouth: Girl Rising
It’s International Day of the Girl and, to celebrate, we’re turning the spotlight on the film Girl Rising, which launches globally today with screenings all over the world. With narrators such as Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep, the documentary tells the stories of nine girls — like Cambodian orphan Sokha, picking through garbage for survival — and their journey for education. There’s an accompanying Girl Rising movement too, which campaigns for girls’ education. Did you know that there are 33 million fewer girls than boys in primary school? But that, at the same time, a girl with an extra year of education can earn 20 percent more as an adult? So help us spread the word and, to find the screening closest to you, click here.
Best Dressed: Eleonora Carisi
Eleonora Carisi’s great eye for color translates not only to her personal style but also to her Turin-based concept shop, YouYou Store, which focuses on items created by emerging artists. We caught up with the Italian blogger, here wearing Tory’s Harriet shirt and Kara skirt, to talk about quintessential Italian style and the burgeoning designers who have caught her eye.
Book of the Week: Diana Vreeland Memos
Diana Vreeland needs no introduction. Neither do her witty proclamations and bon mots. And if you’re a fan — and, really, who isn’t? — then you’ll love the new book Diana Vreeland Memos: The Vogue Years, which confirms everything you already know about this legendary editor: she’s imminently quotable and completely a fashion tour de force. Compiled by her grandson, it features a trove of personal correspondences to designers, editors, models and photographers — influencers all, from Richard Avedon and Horst P. Horst to Veruschka, Halston and Cristobal Balenciaga. Memos is a fascinating read, compelling both in its intimacy and over-the-top flair. But don’t just take our word for it — glimpse into her world of words here yourself.
Most Wanted: Riding Boots
A tall drink of water. As classic as they come. Walk through fall effortlessly in a champion set of riding boots. Our Christy riding boot not only captures equestrian chic to perfection, it also bends over backwards to best accommodate you. Elastic panels on its side make for an easy, flexible fit and a made-to-measure feel that work on a variety of leg sizes. Simply put, it’s a need-to-have essential — for your fall stable and beyond.
Word of Mouth: New York’s LeChurro
Happy National Day of Spain! If you’re in New York, you can ring in the holiday — which fetes Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas — with a classic treat from the country: the sweet fried churro. Former attorney Elena Madariaga’s LeChurro spot on the Upper East Side offers both traditional and inventive takes on that Spanish donut, which she recommends as breakfast fare. And, indeed, once you start the day with a café cortado and churro topped with fresh fruit, you’ll never look at a slice of toast the same again. We talked to Elena about that doughy goodness here.
Street Style: Virginie Dhello
What is it about Parisian style? More than just a little je ne sais quoi, for sure. Veteran French stylist and VeePost writer Virginie Dhello, here wearing Tory’s Parkan backpack, sheds some light on the matter.
To Do: Chuck Close at Guild Hall
No computer screen can replicate the experience of seeing a Chuck Close painting in person. There’s the way his mammoth portraits, several feet tall, can engulf you. The way their faces melt into abstract swirls of color, neatly organized like pixels on a grid, when you step close. And the way they snap back into people when you step back. It really is an experience. So if you find yourself in East Hampton, swing by the museum at Guild Hall where, until October 14, you can take in a new exhibit of mostly recent works — and delight in the artist’s plays of perception up close.

Meet the Band: San Fermin
When San Fermin takes the stage, they do it in a big way — eight musicians strong. The band’s recently-released debut album, meanwhile, takes their sound even bigger — with 22 different contributors. Led by classically-trained composer and pianist Ellis Ludwig-Leone, the currently-touring Brooklyn group fuses folk with chamber pop to great effect. Here, we chat with Ludwig-Leone, as well as lead vocalists Rae Cassidy and Allen Tate, about guilty pleasure music and the best album of all time.
Alyssa Vingan On: Being Young & Having Breast Cancer
At 21, most college students are focused on what they might do after graduation. Alyssa Vingan’s last semester played out differently than the norm, however, when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer. Here wearing Tory’s Sabe bootie, the Fashion Writer and Editor shares the wisdom she learned from her year-long journey back to health.
Hollye Jacobs On: When a Friend Has Cancer
Hollye Jacobs has a unique perspective on breast cancer. She’s a Palliative Care Nurse and Social Worker who’s had to comfort and care for breast cancer patients — and she’s been one herself. After being diagnosed in 2010, she began writing about her journey “through, with, over and around breast cancer,” as she calls it, on her blog The Silver Pen. It’s an engaging read full of advice and humor, where she shares personal tales and recommendations on everything from books to healthy eats. As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we asked Hollye — here wearing Tory’s Patsy coat and Drew pant — to share a few words of advice on supporting a friend with cancer.
Day in the Life: Alexandra Perron
Taking in and taking on Paris Fashion Week alongside Garance Doré? As Doré’s assistant, Alexandra Perron does just that. Here, she gives a behind-the-scenes peek at one of their jam-packed Paris days.
To Do: 50 Years of Rock & Roll at Snap Galleries
A lot can happen in 50 years. Just ask British photographer Gered Mankowitz, who’s catalogued half a century’s worth of the ever-shifting musical scene — from the Swinging Sixties and Glam Rock Seventies to the New Wave Eighties and beyond. You can soak it all in at London’s Snap Galleries, which is celebrating Gered’s golden jubilee with a retrospective exhibit open till November 2nd. It’s an impressive time warp, where you can spot the famous mugs of rock-and-roll legends including Marianne Faithful, Kate Bush, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Glitter, Duran Duran and The Rolling Stones. Curiously enough, these now-iconic portraits owe a nod to Inspector Jacques Clouseau himself, Peter Sellers; the actor, a family friend, was the one who initially encouraged Gered to pursue photography.
