Textile Designer Charlotte Lawson Johnston On: Interior Style & Decor Tips
Get to know the founder of the new London-based textiles film CLJ Home. Here, Charlotte Lawson Johnston talks to us about interior style, decor mantras and that time she spent actually printing textiles, hands on, in a factory. She shares some quick tips to update your home for the season, too.
CLJ Home is…
A textiles company. We sell chic yet affordable fabric by the meter for the home. Cushions launching soon… but little steps!
The launch collection…
My first fabric is a classic cane print. I was inspired whilst having breakfast at the Palm Beach home of our friends Harry and Laura Slatkin (Slatcane is the name of this first collection!). Their tumblers sat in a beautiful woven cane encasing and I simply interpreted this pattern in my own way. The Slatcane collection comes in several colorways; in a cotton and linen mix.
My brief backstory…
I grew up in South Africa on the outskirts of Jo’burg and then the very idyllic Channel Islands, off the west coast of France. My father has lived in the U.S., which is where my love for that fresh American preppy design aesthetic comes from! I studied at Durham University (where I met my husband Harry), then the New School of Interior Design in New York, followed by textiles at Central Saint Martins in London. I then did a six-month apprenticeship at a textiles-printing factory on the outskirts of London, printing on the factory floor gaining hands-on experience. The same factory now print my fabrics for CLJ Home. As a family, we have lived in Switzerland and last year spent a year based in Buenos Aires traveling around South America too — I gained much design inspiration from the dusty towns of the campo, such as the village of Garzon in Uruguay.
My personal style…
I’m not afraid of color or prints but in a classic context. I also love the feel of a natural fabric against my skin — such as linen in the summer.
And when it comes to my interior style…
Our home feels happy. There are punches of color, such as a pair of bright yellow bar stools in my kitchen, which always make me smile in the morning! I treasure memories and so have far too many photo frames around my house. Our home does not feel designed; it is just full of all the objects and furniture I love and somehow this works!
My favorite textiles, prints and patterns…
There are too many to mention! All of those designed by our national treasure here in England: Nina Campbell. Also: China Seas, Quadrille, John Stefanidis, Galbraith & Paul and Veere Grenney — all are stocked at Tissus d’Hélène in London.
And why I love the above…
I love geometric prints in muted color palettes!
My love for interiors and great textiles comes from…
Having a room as a child that doubled as a guest room. It was incredibly formal and full of antiques. I spent hours drawing and dreaming up my perfect bedroom and filling it with all the things I wasn’t allowed. My mother was so impressed that she asked me to come up with a scheme for another room and when she consulted an interior designer for her opinion, this woman could not believe it was the work of a 14-year-old.
My decor mantra is…
Go with your gut, stay true to who you are and what you like. Don’t design your home to impress others — design it for YOU!
One quick tip to update your home for the summer…
Crisp white linen sheets are a must. Change scatter cushions on both your bed and sofas, staying with the same color scheme but going for brighter and lighter hues for the summer months. Constantly fill your home with freshly cut flowers. And, finally, embrace the longer hours by throwing open your windows and doors.
Favorite room in the world…
It’s got to be the main Club House of the Lyford Cay Club in the Bahamas, designed by Tom Scheerer. The chocolate brown palm tree wallpaper gets me every time!
And my favorite room in my own home …
My eight-year-old daughter Poppy’s room… because it’s just like the dream room I mentioned above, the one I had always dreamt of having when I was her age. Lucky girl!
