Costume designer Annina Pfuel has done both stage and screen, earning her industry cred at places like W magazine and on the set of the 2012 film Anna Karenina. She’ll capture your attention from the start — her style self-description is one of our favorites — and just wait till she tells you about idle days in Sardinia and a certain storied indigo dyer… #ToryTunic
My style is…
A Teutonic-romance, Brit-punk mash-up.
And my secret styling trick…
I like wearing one thing that is slightly mad or outrageous. In order to pull it off I make sure the rest of the outfit is simple or elegant to balance it out… it doesn’t always work.
First fashion memory…
I was five years old playing dress up in my very smart aunt’s closet… a habit I still entertain.
I love a great tunic because…
It is very feminine and elegant but at the same time ultra-relaxed and cool. To me tunics and caftans signal an attitude that’s natural.
My tip to styling/accessorizing a tunic…
Long chains with vintage/antique pendants.
My favorite beach getaway in the world…
The island of Sardinia. I have been going there since childhood. The landscape with its smooth round rocks and aromatic macchia is utterly unique. It was very popular in the Seventies and to me has a great retro feel.
And my recommendations on what to do/eat/see there…
My favorite place to eat is a little farm inland called La Sasima. The best thing to do during the day is to take boat trips to one of the many stunning lagoons around the Costa Smeralda.
My bohemian icon…
There are so many. I’m inspirited by people like Anita Berber, Baudelaire, Maria Sibylla Merian, Patti Smith… They chose to live outside society’s conventional framework in order to explore their art. This is something I admire because I’m a rather structured person.
The color I most love…
Indigo. The love deepened on a trip to Japan where I went to see the indigo dyers’ workshops in Kyoto. One of the artisans, at a workshop called Aizenkobo, was 17th-generation indigo dyer.
My backstory…
I’m a London-based costume designer for stage and screen. I often work together with designer/opera director Patrick Kinmonth. My next production will be Shakespeare’s As You Like It at Windsor Park’s Savill Garden this summer. I’m also currently working on my own line of vintage-inspired hand-painted dresses.
