J.J. Martin returns to Tory Daily! Here, the founder of LaDoubleJ.com and Editor-at-Large at Wallpaper* shares some incredible style tips (say yes to layering and jeweled flats) amd tells us why, in her book, Adele Bloch-Bauer rules over Seventies-style bohemians any day. #ToryTunic
Colorful, eclectic and always changing. How I dress really reflects the mood I am in. But I seem to always gravitate towards bold pattern, joyful prints and unusual embroideries. I love clothes that speak and emit positive energy and happiness. It sounds odd, but I honestly believe it to be true.
And my secret styling trick…
I love to mix prints. But you sort of need to do this consciously. You need to find a common ground between the prints, which is usually a shared color schematic. It’s all important to find clean lines in the clothes and accessories if you’re using a lot of pattern and color.
First fashion memory…
Sneaking into my mother’s closet and trying on her clothes. I particularly loved a navy blue wrap halter dress with ruffled trim and white polka dots that I was able to cinch onto myself. I also loved doing makeovers with friends when they came over to play and I had a tendency to put on all of my grandmother’s costume jewelry at once when she visited us. So I was sort of maximal from the beginning.
Best fashion advice ever received…
Know your body and what looks best on it. Do not adopt trends that don’t work for your body shape. If you have a wide rear end, low-rise tight jeans don’t work for you no matter how badly you want to wear them. I feel like this advice needs to be posted on billboards throughout America.
I love a great tunic because…
It’s major impact with minimal work. You don’t need to think of a whole coordinated outfit. The single piece is the outfit. I also love that they can go from morning breakfast to evening cocktails without changing.
My tip to styling/accessorizing a tunic…
It’s all about the flat shoe. Unless you’re going to a super-fancy evening. But even then, I love an elegant jeweled flat at night, especially when you’re anywhere near a beach. It’s also fun to layer tunics over other dresses or pants. To move from day to night, all you need to do is add jewelry and make up. I like bold vintage necklaces like the ones we sell on LaDoubleJ.com and a strong lip.
My favorite beach getaway in the world…
It’s got to be Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole. It’s a pain in the neck to get there from Milan, but once you set foot on the property, you’re transported instantly into a sea-side paradise with lush, beautiful landscaping.
The good thing is that you don’t need to go anywhere or do anything. The hotel is a beautiful compound. You just walk down a path from a cliff and plop down on their private beach with these chic yellow and white striped towels and umbrellas and gaze at the gorgeous water all day. It’s very casual and yet very elegant at the same time. We’re doing a pop-up shop there for Il Pellicano the second weekend in July and I can’t wait to pass out under the sun.
My bohemian icon…
I like the turn-of-the-century bohemians better than the Seventies Boho girls. I’m more in the Paul Poiret camp of fashion where clothes were so artfully decorative and yet delicate. The workmanship and elegance is just mind-boggling. If I had to name a woman it would be Adele Bloch-Bauer in Gustav Klimt’s famous Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I painting. I often think of that image when I close my eyes and want to be inspired.
The color I most love…
Blue, blue and more blue. My entire house is covered in shades of blue. I continue to redecorate every six months and I’m always adding more, like a new glass tile terrace in bright lapis blue. For clothing I am really into green. That color really intrigues me right now.
My backstory…
I’m an American-born fashion and design journalist based in Milan. I moved here 15 years ago and am currently Wallpaper* magazine’s Editor-at-Large. Fifteen months ago I launched a shoppable online magazine called LaDoubleJ.com in which we sell vintage clothes and jewelry and show them worn on Milan’s coolest creative women. We like to champion underground talent, and we have a penchant for eye-popping print and both (among other things!) are now on view at our new showroom space in Milan. So now people can come visit us and shop our WunderWall — which was designed by architect Luca Cipelletti whose house we did this very shoot in! — where we feature vintage clothes, new clothes that we make using vintage patterns and various design objects. We launched the wall during the Salone del Mobile with a special sale of Anna Piaggi’s vintage jewelry from her personal archive and hand-painted ceramics by the Swedish artist Liselotte Watkins.
