NYFW Instagram Diary: Lucky’s Eva Chen
Get a glimpse of what Fashion Week is like for an editor on the go — make that an Editor-in-Chief on the go. We asked Lucky magazine’s Eva Chen to create an Instagram diary of New York Fashion Week for The Tory Blog. She hit up the shows at Lincoln Center (wearing Tory’s Electra coat, top right), swung by the new Ladurée outpost in Soho, crossed borough borders for Alexander Wang’s Brooklyn show, shared her front-row view to Tory’s runway today and more.
The adventures continue on her Instagram here, @evachen212.

It’s a wrap! Our Fall 2014 show is over, but you can relive it again at Tory’s runway experience and download the soundtrack to listen on the go. From Soul II Soul to John Carpenter thrillers, get the full playlist here — plus, listen on Spotify now.

Entrepreneurs: La Marque’s Meredith Melling & Valerie Boster
In life, it’s easy to rest on your laurels and never take a risk. This month, two fashion-world insiders prove that, for them, this was never an option. After departing Vogue earlier this year, Valerie Boster (left, wearing Tory’s Mia pants) and Meredith Melling (wearing the Brynn necklace) have finally pulled up the curtains on their much-anticipated venture: La Marque. Applying the lessons learned behind the scenes during their combined 20-plus years on the Vogue masthead, they’ve created a business to help grow and develop the brands they admire. Here, photographed against a painting by Geraldine Neuwirth, the magazine’s alums share a little bit of their vision, plus some wisdom imparted by their former boss.
NYFW Instagram Diary: Refinery29’s Christene Barberich
She’s got style, she’s got grace… and with Fashion Week here, she’s running all over the place. We asked Refinery29’s Editor-in-Chief Christene Barberich to create a New York Fashion Week diary on Instagram for The Tory Blog. She captured the sterling silver nails at Delpozo in closeup, offered plenty of pretty shoe-peeping….
Check in with the latest on her Instagram here, @christenebarberich.

To See: Ski Jumping & Robert Capa
Hit the slopes this ski season — without stepping foot in snow (or at least, in a foot of snow). Check out photojournalist Robert Capa’s colorful captures of postwar European ski resorts — featuring leisurely montages like the sunbather above — currently on view at New York’s International Center of Photography. Or, hit your couch: Women’s ski jumping is making its hard-fought Olympic debut this week in Sochi. Watch as Americans Sarah Hendrickson, Jessica Jerome and Lindsey Van soar through the air with the greatest of ease — at up to 60 miles per hour — all while trying to go as far as possible and stick the landing. Inspired to take a run or two of your own? Keep reading for a list of our favorite ski destinations worldwide…
Double Take: Street-Style Photographers Face Off
Tommy Ton and Phil Oh are buddies who both happen to follow fashion shows — and their attendees — around the world. But they have even more in common than you might think…
Word of Mouth: Tory at 10
Ten years ago today, we opened our doors on Elizabeth Street. (Those would be metaphoric doors, of course, since the orange lacquer ones hadn’t arrived in time.) But we opened, thanks to a team effort of friends and family, including Tory’s mother Reva. Some things never change… and we hope they never do. Ten years have flown by, and we can’t thank our customers enough for coming along on this ride. Here’s to the next decade and exciting things to come in 2014.
Best Dressed: Natalie Joos
Natalie Joos not only pairs prints like a pro, she slips seamlessly from styling and casting to design consulting and blogging — and back. Here, wearing Tory’s floral Valerie dress and blush Reyna dress, the woman behind style site Tales of Endearment talks balance and all things Fashion Week…
Tory’s Shoe Guide
Get your kicks with a sporty sneaker. Or kick your heels off and go for a chic sandal. Whatever the occasion, the shoes make the outfit. Let us show you how to hit a sartorial home run — from the ground up — with this handy guide to the season’s best.
Kelly Corrigan On: Glitter & Glue
It sounds like the start of your next craft project. But for bestselling author Kelly Corrigan, Glitter and Glue is the title of her newest memoir. Named for the way her mother described their family dynamic — “Your father’s the glitter, but I’m the glue” — the book explores that special bond between mothers and daughters. Here, wearing Tory’s Merida dress, Corrigan talks about the lessons she learned from her mother — and what she learned from being one herself.
Day in the Life: VFiles’ Julie Anne Quay
You know how some people just exude cool? As far as we’re concerned, Julie Anne Quay, CEO and Founder of VFILES — a social network where hardcore fashion lovers can talk and shop collections created by members — pretty much defines the word. Maybe it’s the fact that she ran Steven Meisel’s studio for years and counts insiders like Hedi Slimane among her closest pals. Or because she’s worked with Richard Avedon and Steven Klein. Or was Executive Editor of V magazine. But this Aussie — with a wicked sense of humor — has got it. So, of course, we were curious about how she navigates a day during New York Fashion Week. Here, she takes us through her biggest day — yesterday’s user-generated fashion show, VFILES MADE FASHION 2.
Word of Mouth: Porter Magazine
The wait is over. Net-A-Porter’s new magazine is out. At a hefty 300 pages and with Editor-in-Chief Lucy Yeomans at the helm, Porter features all the high-gloss impact of your typical fashion read — with the added digital know-how of the online retailer. So you’ll find gorgeous fashion shoots (and a cover featuring Gisele Bündchen), interviews with designers like Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz and in-depth articles with actresses Julianne Moore and Uma Thurman. And you’ll be able to shop directly by scanning the pages using the Net-A-Porter app, which also includes extras like 3D content and video. Our favorite part? That the issue’s dedicated to “a celebration of incredible women,” from artist Cindy Sherman and Apple exec Angela Ahrendts to playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan.
To Do: David Bailey at the National Portrait Gallery
Nobody captured the Swinging Sixties — and its icons — quite like David Bailey. He’s given us so many of the era’s defining images: a doe-eyed Jean Shrimpton, the cool denizens of East End London, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who… But there’s more to this photographer’s oeuvre, which goes on full display at London’s National Portrait Gallery tomorrow. Beyond the images of Youthquake cool, Bailey’s Stardust includes his work across decades and continents, from Eighties Jerry Hall and current Kate Moss to Australian Aboriginals and Papua New Guinea natives. With over 250 photos, selected and printed by the man himself, this is one exhibit not to be missed.

Just One Thing: Hat Tip
There’s more than one way to wear a hat. Or hats on hats on hats. Inspired by a set of chic chapeaus that Tory found while on a trip to Morocco, our whimsical print has made its way onto knits, dresses and accessories. So go ahead; wear a “hat” as a scarf or an espadrille shoe. Or take a page from Tory and layer it, sweater over shirt — paired with Lilianna sandals and a Robinson satchel — for a playful print-on-print look.
Sea’s Monica Paolini On: Beauty & Fashion Week Rituals
Sea Co-Designer Monica Paolini not only inherited design know-how from Betsey Johnson, but a beautiful vanity table, too. Here, Monica — Betsey’s former Design Director — talks about the vanity (second slide, above), which now resides in her Chinatown home-slash-showroom, as well as how she’s prepping for Fashion Week.
Entrepreneurs: TheSkimm’s Danielle Weisberg & Carly Zakin
Refresh your cocktail chatter daily — and don’t miss any important headlines. The founders of theSkimm, Danielle Weisberg (left, wearing Tory’s Sandy sweater) and Carly Zakin (wearing the Tyler sweater), read the news so you don’t have to — collecting everything that’s need-to-know in a newsletter delivered straight to your inbox. Here, they talk fail-safe ice breakers and their favorite daily reads.
Chef Simpson Wong On: Lunar New Year Feasts & Fêtes
There are plenty of Asian superstitions — even when it comes to the dinner table. Just ask chef Simpson Wong of downtown hot spot Wong New York (you haven’t lived unless you’ve tried his Roast Duck Ice Cream). He explains why, growing up in Malaysia, the Lunar New Year feast hinged on homophones — shrimp, for instance, because the Chinese word for it sounds like laughter. Here, Simpson also shares other ways to ensure happiness and prosperity, as well as his special LNY menu.
Susie Cox On: The Year of the Horse
Before we celebrate the Lunar New Year tomorrow, we checked in with astrology expert Susie Cox to see what 2014, under the Chinese zodiac, brings. Above, to ring in this year of the horse, a photo of Tory horseback riding as a child.
