If Claire McCardell were alive today, she’d have a newsletter. There’s something about the feminine instinct to share advice, wisdom and precious bits of practical knowledge. It’s hard to imagine McCardell’s contemporary Christian Dior telling women to create a collection of interesting coats instead of buying “one good coat.” Or Norman Norrell offering a detailed checklist of how to buy a dress.

McCardell did both — and much more — in her book, What Shall I Wear?, reissued in 2022 with a foreword from Tory.
